Le terme de mème a été proposé pour la première fois par Richard Dawkins dans Le Gène égoïste (1976) et provient d'une association entre gène et mimesis (du grec « imitation »).

Memetic algorithm is a general name for a broad class of population-based heuristics. More specifically, these heuristics are optimization techniques which seek to integrate as much domain-specific knowledge as possible. Therefore, memetic algorithms are commonly described as very abstract templates, which must be instantiated for each problem. Some researchers refer to memetic algorithms as hybrid genetic algorithms and Lamarckian genetic algorithms. Memetic algorithms are sometimes shortened to the acronym MA.

Memetic Algorithms is a population-based approach for heuristic search in optimization problems. They have shown that they are orders of magnitude faster than traditional Genetic Algorithms for some problem domains. Basically, they combine local search heuristics with crossover operators. For this reason, some researchers have viewed them as Hybrid Genetic Algorithms. However, combinations with constructive heuristics or exact methods may also belong to this class of metaheuristics...

Memetics is the study of ideas and concepts viewed as "living" organisms, capable of reproduction and evolution in an "Ideosphere" (similar to the Biosphere) consisting of the collective of human minds. Memes reproduce by spreading to new hosts, who will spread them further (typical examples are jokes, catchphrases or politicial ideas).

By Mike Godwin (www.wired.com)
It was back in 1990 that I set out on a project in memetic engineering. The Nazi-comparison meme, I'd decided, had gotten out of hand - in countless Usenet newsgroups, in many conferences on the Well, and on every BBS that I frequented, the labeling of posters or their ideas as "similar to the Nazis" or "Hitler-like" was a recurrent and often predictable event. It was the kind of thing that made you wonder how debates had ever occurred without having that handy rhetorical hammer.
